She will be in Sucre, studying Spanish for 3 months. So, I based the cover loosely on Bolivian tapestry. The cover is paper and embroidery floss. The yellow diamonds are inlaid in the blue paper. I chose long-stitch for the binding, to flow with the cover design. Blank journals like this are good for saving ticket stubs, programs, food labels, other common paper things from the region one is visiting, as well as one's own memories, and messages added in their own hand by friends one meets and fellow travelers.
Well, it's early Show & Tell time. Alisa Golden has a great blog that I follow, Making Handmade Books. In January she showed a project she is doing with a weekly calendar. I had an extra 2014 calendar, so I decided to use it as a kind of visual journal/media exercise book. Here are my first few weeks' attempts.

The first one is 6 cropped images from some photos I took interpreting light.

In the second series, I wanted to deal with a distant image, a mid-range image, and a close-up image. Besides the printed out images, I used only green pencil and a black pen.

This third spread is not finished. The blank space will be tissue collage. I wanted to work with transformation with this page. So I'm transforming the upper lefthand image into the lower right hand image. I have used colored pencils and and a #2 lead so far.

I'll add future pages as I complete them. I love this use of a previous year's calendar.

It's winter! I admit it. I don't want to venture out very far at 20 below, but come on -- suit up, protect your nose and cheeks and head out! If it's sunny and no wind, it's fine. Of course I prefer it to be 0 or above. This was actually taken on a below-0 day. I had my car close by. It was windy, but I couldn't wear gloves and take pictures at the same time. I'd brave the cold for up to 30 seconds, or until my fingers screamed at me, then I'd warm up in the car before heading out again.
Snow is finally melting here, and since I heard a woodchuck's whistle on Wisconsin Public Radio yesterday, I think I can identify the thing that just whistled numerous times somewhere in my woodsy/yard as a woodchuck, not a bird. There are quite a few birds, though. One family building a nest above my bow window. If you've managed to find your way here, to read this post, you deserve an image, too.

Everyone looks beautiful with a genuine smile and a sparkle in their eyes. And the beautiful thing about it is - we can get them and give them for free. We can give them to loved ones and strangers. We can give them to animals, or to the universe when we come up with a brilliant idea or solution to a problem. We can give them to ourselves in the mirror. They don't cause clutter; they are not fattening; and they do not need translation into other languages, metric, weight or temperature systems. They just ARE. I mean, they just are BEAUTIFUL!

Today I'm taking part in the My Most Beautiful Thing Blogsplash to celebrate beautiful things - inspired by Fiona Robyn's new novel, The Most Beautiful Thing. Bloggers from all over the world are taking part and writing or posting pictures of their most beautiful things today. Have a beautiful day!.
Check back to see my post. Meanwhile, here's a beautiful thing for today. My mom collected kaleidoscopes. She always could be uplifted and cheered by looking through a kaleidoscope, or at a kaleidoscope quilt, painting, or other creation. This was generated on the web. Kaleidoscopes are beautiful, but my mom was more beautiful - she expressed so much love, and she saw something good in everyone.

For instance, Hannah. I love it because it is a palindrome. Fortunately for me, a very sweet palindromic Hannah is part of my life, and I recently had the opportunity to send her a little book. I used pre-cut neon sign papers that you can purchase at an office supply store. They are simply folded in half and hinged with small tabs of another neon sheet. The structure is a simple accordion, with the covers each written to read "upright." So one is "upside down" in relation to the other. The partly open view, shows each cover. The other view is of the book fully laid out. Loved doing this little project!

Just back from St. Louis, where I delivered this and 3 other similar contemporary crazy quilt squares to a dear friend for her wedding quilt. Well, it's aged into an anniversary quilt, but it is beautifully moving from the idea stage to finished-comforting-object stage.

I'm off to The Clearing in Door County on Sunday, to attend Judy Bridges' Writers' Retreat. It's exciting to trust that something equally beautiful and concrete will emerge in poetic or narrative form from the phrases and verbal images lurking and gestating in thought. "The Clearing" - place and process! I know I'll learn and grow. What a great gift.BFayBookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01306639880810525072noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8096140439729124066.post-90232689332089158532011-08-24T18:08:00.000-07:002011-08-24T18:13:48.267-07:00Sidewalk art as book-workWaupaca Community Arts Center recently participated in Arts on the Square's Chalk of the Town event. Our entry was 16' long and 4' tall. I thought of it as a book you read as you walked along. The sidewalk in front of our store is quite uneven and stony. The bulk of the work was done on Tuesday, and somewhat washed away in the steady rains of Tuesday evening. Wednesday from 11 - 4 Selene Bloedorn-Saeed and Anita Golke helped me as I basically redid the whole thing. No rain since, and it seems to be holding up. What I have enjoyed is hearing people laugh as they get to the end. The copy reads "Life without ART is like cheese curds without SQUEAK" -- for non cheeseheads: curds are best FRESH and warm, when they squeak as you chew - a mellifluous symphony in your mouth.

We gathered for her mom's memorial service. My friend had printed the pages for a wonderful memory book for the members of her extended family. I had printed 2 additional sheets to insert. Constructing the books required a bit of changing from plan A to plan B, but we got a production line going and completed the project in time, and in good form. For my friend, the experience of choosing the photos and laying out the pages provided a welcome opportunity to look through family photos and to get a comforting sense of her mom's life in the process.

Compiling memorial books brings a sweet sense of closure that can be shared in a simple way and enjoyed by circles of family and friends. A small group or individuals can choose the photos most meaningful to them if you have a stack of inexpensive, small plastic photo albums along with boxes of copied photos, on a convenient table as they attend a wake, visiting hours, or a reception after a memorial service. This provides a thoughtful memorial without one person bearing the entire burden of creating all the books.

It was not a burden to create my friend's books, because she had all the parts on hand, all the materials we needed to finish the job, and an edition of only 7 books. The shared information and experience enriched and blessed my life, too.BFayBookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01306639880810525072noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8096140439729124066.post-80430552405526347642011-05-14T16:31:00.000-07:002011-05-14T16:43:45.200-07:00I recently attended a writers' retreat at Sinsinawa Mounds, in Wisconsin, conducted by Judy Bridges. She is an excellent writing mentor and runs Redbird Studio (http://www.redbirdstudio.com/index.html), and it was a great experience. The retreat gave me a good objective look at my writing, and a firm but joyful push to keep going. I haven't created any books lately. . . That will come.BFayBookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01306639880810525072noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8096140439729124066.post-67194997879783594782010-06-03T19:00:00.000-07:002010-06-11T12:51:22.273-07:00
Well, very little activity here! It is cut in a meander pattern. The above picture shows it all opened out. It can be read page by page, as a common book. When it is closed, as seen below, it fits in the palm of your hand. It's a good little item to slip into your pocket and use for meditation when ever you feel the need. Many people contributed words when my aunt asked, "What one word do you think will be important in the 21st Century?" I arranged them into this little book for contemplation. Some words included: peace, communication, multicultural, balance, listen, change, diplomacy.BFayBookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01306639880810525072noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8096140439729124066.post-58332661804432006392009-08-08T16:55:00.000-07:002009-08-08T17:13:16.798-07:00This mini-book is a collaboration between my aunt and me.BFayBookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01306639880810525072noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8096140439729124066.post-72736018308274771572009-08-08T16:47:00.000-07:002009-08-08T16:55:33.043-07:00It's pretty clear I am new at this. What I plan to include is information about the books I make and projects I am working on. Let's see if I can get a picture on here . . .
